San Juan, Puerto Rico, Oct. 3, 2019 – The Flamboyan Arts Fund, a partnership between Flamboyan Foundation, Lin-Manuel Miranda, his family, and the Hamilton musical, is pleased to announce that it has selected thirty-four arts organizations in Puerto Rico to receive grants totaling $4 million. The grantees span a variety of disciplines including performing arts, visual arts, and literature. The Flamboyan Arts Fund seeks to preserve, amplify and sustain the work of local artists and arts organizations. Through these grants, local arts organizations will have the opportunity to strengthen their organizations, launch new programs and expand their reach across the island.
“Getting to know the critical work of these organizations and being able to support their growth and stability is a privilege. Having worked in Puerto Rico’s education and philanthropic sectors for more than ten years, the Flamboyan Foundation’s commitment to ensuring that education, arts and culture are embedded in the revitalization of Puerto Rico is stronger than ever,” said Flamboyan Puerto Rico Executive Director Carlos J. “Bringing Hamilton to Puerto Rico was a personal dream. Together with our partners at Hamilton, we wanted to make sure the production left a lasting impact on the arts in Puerto Rico during its recovery from Hurricane Maria. We are so proud of the grants that the Flamboyan Arts Fund has made, strengthening the island’s cultural institutions and allowing the arts, culture, and education to flourish and thrive for generations to come”, Lin-Manuel Miranda said.
After closing night of Hamilton Puerto Rico – which raised $14.7 million in support of the arts – the Flamboyan Arts Fund opened a public, competitive grant cycle for Puerto Rican arts organizations. The Fund received 147 applications from across Puerto Rico. The 34 newest Flamboyan Arts Fund grantees join a network of arts organizations working to preserve and promote the arts island-wide after both the financial crisis and the devastating effects caused by Hurricanes Irma and Maria. 
This cohort of grant recipients aims to expand the arts programmatically and geographically. Organizations such as Danzactiva, Cuarzo Blanco and Instituto de Formación Literaria will use the grant funds to extend their programmatic work aimed at underserved populations including children with Down Syndrome, the hearing impaired and incarcerated people. Municipalities outside the San Juan metro area will be reached through the work of grantees like Mujeres de Islas in Culebra, Casa Histórica de la Música Cayeyana in Cayey, COPI in Loíza and Banda Comunitaria de San Sebastián, among others. The Flamboyan Arts Fund will also support preservation efforts led by organizations like La Casa del Libro and Fundación Nacional para la Cultura Popular.
With this latest announcement, the Flamboyan Arts Fund now has a grantee portfolio of 46 arts organizations plus an emerging individual artists network being funded through grants to four organizations. To date, the Arts Fund has awarded $8.6 million in support of artists and arts organizations in Puerto Rico.
