Tamika Smith - Flamboyan

Tamika Smith

In her role at Flamboyan, Tamika leads district partners in planning, contextualizing, and implementing strategies to ensure that effective family engagement is embedded at the district and school levels. She believes every student should have equitable access to the support and resources that they need to excel in their academic journey.

Tamika has dedicated her career to serving students in marginalized communities. Her career began in the non-profit sector providing wraparound services and case management to at-risk youth, where she built strategic partnerships with community stakeholders to provide support to families and students throughout Maryland. That role led to teaching in at-risk schools and serving in leadership roles to support family engagement work. From curriculum development to launching mentorship and college access programming, Tamika advanced the academic agenda for underrepresented students. After leaving the classroom, she transitioned to higher education at the University of Maryland for nearly 10 years, where she worked to close the minority achievement gap for students across the country.  Through the development of culturally relevant teaching pedagogy, statewide student enrichment programs, and college preparation programming she was able to reach thousands of students, parents, and educators. Prior to joining the Flamboyan team, Tamika spent several years leading college access work for DC students, managing local and national partnerships as well as managing an expansive portfolio of local and national scholarship initiatives.

Tamika is the wife of her high school sweetheart and the proud mother to her 10-year-old “Sonshine”. She loves to travel, try new restaurants, and create beautiful experiences and memories for family and friends. Her favorite quote is “People never care how much you know, until they know how much you care.”

My favorite teacher in school was… Dr. Dade. She taught me to challenge norms and think beyond limitations. She also taught me the power of perseverance.
